Newport Aquarium Announces New Exhibit: “Jellies: Go with the Flow”

Newport, Ky. (January 21, 2025)  - An exciting new adventure is opening in March at Newport Aquarium that will take visitors on a journey through the world of jellies. “Jellies: Go with the Flow” promises to be a visually stunning experience for visitors, but also a chance for them to peek behind the scenes into the care and keeping of these bizarre and beautiful creatures. 

“Jellies: Go with the Flow” is a mesmerizing dive into a dreamscape, featuring a bloom of different jelly species – each with their own otherworldly characteristics. Upon entering the gallery, visitors will be greeted by the graceful and hypnotic Atlantic nettles. This species is known for its trailing tentacles that drift and pulse through the water. As visitors wander through the gallery, they will encounter other ethereal jelly species – like the playful upside-down jellies. These peculiar little blob-shaped animals spend most of their lives upside down. Like plants, the upside-down jellies photosynthesize to produce food for the jelly to eat.

Visitors will also be taking a glimpse “behind the glass” into how these animals are propagated by the animal care team at Newport Aquarium. The propagation lab will highlight the life cycle of jellies, allowing visitors to see how they develop through several stages. Visitors will watch their shape and behavior change as they grow from baby jellies into mesmerizing creatures.  

“Every part of Jellies: Go with the Flow is designed to spark a sense of curiosity and also appreciation for each species of jelly,” said Rebecca Foster, Executive Director, “As our guests explore the new exhibit, we want them to leave the aquarium with a renewed sense of respect for the ocean and continue doing their part to protect all animals who call it home.”

With the new exhibit opening just in time for spring break, Newport Aquarium is bringing back its popular free Pre-K Membership for kids ages 2 to 4 years old. Starting January 21, parents will be able to register their child for the free membership, which gives little ones a full year of unlimited visits – including an invite to the grand opening of “Jellies: Go with the Flow” for free.

The free Pre-K membership adds an extra layer of excitement with additional benefits – including a 10% discount in Sharky’s Café, Sweet Dreams Candy Store, and the gift shop. Parents/Guardians can register their 2 to 4-year-old at NewportAquarium.com through February 23. Once registered, families can activate the free Pre-K Membership by bringing proof of age documentation when they visit the aquarium. The last day to activate the free Pre-K Membership is March 9.
